It is with great regret that we have to inform our customers that due to increases in prices from our distributors, we have no choice but to raise prices on Blue Buffalo products. As such, effective February 28, 2012, prices will increase by approximately 10% to 12% on Blue Buffalo foods.
Blue Buffalo did not share a specific reason for the price increase with us, but we (among other pet food retailers) can speculate that their business model was no longer sustainable, particularly in an environment of rising commodity and energy costs.
To date, Blue Buffalo has worked hard to obtain market share by keeping their prices relatively low in comparison to other grain-free foods. However, the length of time that this type of strategy can be maintained is relatively short, so we started to see sharp price increases around Feb 1.
In an effort to provide the most value to our customers, we kept our prices low for as long as possible while moving the inventory we purchased at the lower price. However, we have reached the point that it is no longer feasible for us to maintain the previous prices.
We have updated the pricing for all Blue Buffalo products on our website. In addition, we are on the prowl for special pricing or any ways that we can pass along the savings to our customers. At the moment, the only coupon that we are aware of is to take the True Blue Test, which results if a $5 coupon. It is not common for Blue Buffalo to use coupons, but we are informed of special pricing opportunities, which we always pass along to our customers.
While this price increase is unfortunate, we take comfort in the fact that Blue Buffalo has chosen to maintain the same high quality standards for raw materials that have given their food the positive reputation to date. While some other companies choose to source low quality raw materials from poor markets in the wake of financial trouble, Blue Buffalo has maintained their quality standards and continued to purchase high quality raw materials. Given this decision, we are comfortable that you will not experience any negative impact on the quality of the food as commodity prices continue to rise.
